COURSE CURRICULUM

The Health Management & Policy (HMP) major is designed to prepare students for careers focused on how healthcare systems operate, are financed, and are improved through data, policy, and management rather than clinical practice. The curriculum is highly structured and sequential, beginning with foundational courses such as United States Health Care Systems (HMP 401), Introduction to Public Health (HMP 403), Epidemiology and Community Medicine (HMP 501), and Using Data to Improve Human Health (HMP 512), which must typically be completed early to remain in the major. As students progress, they move into more advanced coursework in healthcare analytics, operations, finance, economics, law, and organizational management, including courses like Healthcare Operations Management (HMP 712), Health Economics (HMP 642), Health Care Financial Management (HMP 740 and 741), Health Policy (HMP 746), and Law and Ethics in Healthcare (HMP 744). A major strength of the program is its strong emphasis on applied learning, especially through the required field practicum (HMP 622), a full-time summer internship where students work in real healthcare organizations such as hospitals, consulting firms, or public health agencies, applying classroom concepts to real operational and policy problems. The curriculum also includes data-driven training through courses like HMP 711 and HMP 703, which focus on healthcare operations analytics and translation of health data into actionable decisions. Students must maintain a minimum GPA and earn at least a C in all core courses, reflecting the program’s professional standards and competitiveness. By senior year, students complete capstone-style experiences and advanced seminars that integrate management, policy, and analytical skills. Overall, HMP is best suited for students interested in the business, administrative, and policy side of healthcare, preparing them for roles such as healthcare consultants, hospital administrators, health data analysts, insurance and policy specialists, or for graduate study in public health, business, law, or healthcare management, making it a practical, career-oriented program focused on improving how healthcare systems function at both organizational and population levels.
