COURSE CURRICULUM

This Environmental Sciences (Ecosystems option) major at University of New Hampshire is a well-structured interdisciplinary program of about 83–85 credits that builds from basic science foundations to advanced ecosystem analysis and real-world environmental problem solving. The program begins with introductory courses like NR 400, NR 403, and NR 435/437, giving students an overview of natural resources, sustainability, and environmental challenges, then moves into a strong scientific foundation including biology (ecology and cellular biology), chemistry, physics, calculus, and statistics, ensuring students develop quantitative and analytical skills essential for environmental work. The “Earth and its Systems” core expands this knowledge into applied areas such as geology, freshwater systems, soils, climate, ecology, and environmental policy, helping students understand how natural systems function and how human activities impact them. The Environmental Toolkit section focuses on practical skills like Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and quantitative ecology, which are highly valuable in modern environmental careers. In the advanced stage, students choose four upper-level courses in areas like ecosystem dynamics, biogeochemistry, environmental modeling, and climate-related challenges, allowing them to specialize based on their interests such as wildlife ecology, marine systems, or sustainability science. The program culminates in a capstone experience like research projects or thesis work, where students apply their knowledge to real environmental issues, often involving fieldwork or data-driven analysis.
