COURSE CURRICULUM

The Earth Sciences major requires students to complete a combination of foundational coursework, specialization courses, and a capstone experience, totaling around 128 credits for the full degree. Core requirements include essential subjects in mathematics and physical sciences such as Calculus I and II, General Chemistry I and II, and General Physics I and II, which build a strong analytical and scientific foundation. Students must then choose one of two specializations, Geosciences or Ocean Sciences, each offering focused study in different aspects of Earth systems. The Geosciences specialization emphasizes topics such as dynamic Earth processes, Earth history, mineralogy, landscape evolution, geological field methods, crustal formation, and environmental systems, along with biology and advanced electives in areas like hydrology, geochemistry, and geophysics. The Ocean Sciences specialization focuses on oceanography, climate systems, ocean measurements, and interdisciplinary marine sciences, integrating biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, with advanced coursework in areas such as chemical, physical, and geological oceanography. Both specializations require additional upper-level electives, allowing students to deepen their expertise in areas aligned with their interests and career goals, and may include courses from related disciplines such as mathematics, engineering, or environmental science. Professional development courses and a first-year experience course help students transition into and prepare for the field. A capstone experience is required in the senior year, where students apply their knowledge through research projects, internships, fieldwork, or thesis work, demonstrating their ability to analyze data, integrate prior learning, and develop professional competencies. Overall, the program combines rigorous scientific training, hands-on learning, and flexibility, preparing students for careers in environmental science, geosciences, marine industries, and further graduate study.
