COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diagnostic Science major is structured to prepare students for careers in healthcare-related fields by combining strong foundations in biological and chemical sciences with specialized training in diagnostic and laboratory principles. The program begins with foundational courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry with laboratory work, applied biostatistics, and core biological sciences such as molecular biology and cellular biology. Students then build deeper knowledge through bioscience core courses, including microbiology with lab, human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry with laboratory components, and genetics, ensuring a strong understanding of human biology and disease mechanisms.The diagnostic science core focuses on applied clinical and laboratory sciences, including professional development in molecular and biomedical sciences, body fluids analysis, pathogenic microbiology, clinical immunology and serology, hematology and hemostasis, molecular diagnostics, immunohematology and blood banking, medical biochemistry, and clinical chemistry, as well as studies in mycology, parasitology, and virology. These courses emphasize hands-on laboratory skills and real-world diagnostic applications, preparing students to understand and support medical testing and disease detection processes.Students are also required to complete at least 16 credits of major electives, which allow them to broaden or specialize their knowledge in areas such as biomedical laboratory management, histology, endocrinology, toxicology, pharmacology, human microbiome studies, case-based clinical learning, internships in advanced clinical laboratory fields, and research or honors thesis work. Additional options include phlebotomy training, medical sociology, human genetics, and undergraduate teaching or internship experiences.Overall, the program totals approximately 97 credits and integrates science, laboratory practice, and applied diagnostic training. It is designed to prepare graduates for diverse roles in healthcare, biomedical industries, research environments, and quality-focused scientific fields, especially in non-clinical laboratory career pathways.
