COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) option within the Diagnostic Science program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive blend of foundational science, advanced diagnostic coursework, and applied clinical training, preparing them for professional practice in clinical laboratory environments. The curriculum begins with strong foundational courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry with laboratory work, applied biostatistics, and core biosciences such as molecular and cellular biology, microbiology with lab, human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry with laboratory components, and genetics. These courses establish a deep understanding of biological systems and chemical processes essential for diagnostic work.Building on this foundation, students complete specialized diagnostic science core courses that focus on clinical laboratory disciplines, including body fluids analysis, pathogenic microbiology, clinical immunology and serology, hematology and hemostasis, molecular diagnostics, immunohematology and blood banking, medical biochemistry, clinical chemistry, and studies in mycology, parasitology, and virology. These courses are designed to develop both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills necessary for accurate disease detection and analysis. The MLS option also includes applied professional coursework and clinical preparation, such as biomedical laboratory management, phlebotomy theory, and advanced clinical internships in microbiology, hematology, immunohematology, and clinical chemistry. These internship experiences provide hands-on training in real clinical laboratory settings, allowing students to apply their knowledge in professional environments and develop industry-ready competencies.Students must also complete a set of approved electives, which allow for additional specialization in areas such as histology, endocrinology, toxicology, pharmacology, human genetics, microbiome studies, medical sociology, case-based clinical learning, and research or honors thesis work. Overall, the program totals approximately 103 credits and is structured to meet accreditation standards while preparing students for certification and careers as medical laboratory scientists in hospital and clinical laboratory settings.
