COURSE CURRICULUM

Computer science majors are required to maintain strong academic performance in core computing, mathematics, and computer engineering courses, with an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher in these areas as a condition for graduation. If a student’s GPA in these required subjects falls below 2.0 at any point, including the first semester, continuation in the major may be restricted. Several foundational courses such as CS 415, CS 416, CS 420, CS 515, CS 520, and IT 403 must be completed with a minimum grade of C- to satisfy degree requirements. Students are allowed limited course repeats, but excessive repeats can lead to dismissal from the program, with the possibility of applying for reinstatement after one year. Transfer students must also meet the same academic standards and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in all university coursework applicable to the major. The curriculum is structured to provide a broad and deep foundation in computer science, including introductory programming, data structures, algorithms, software engineering, computer systems, cybersecurity, and theoretical computing. Core courses such as CS 400, CS 415, CS 416, CS 515, CS 518, CS 520, CS 620, CS 659, and CS 758 ensure that students gain both practical and theoretical knowledge. Additional advanced topics include operating systems, programming languages, cybersecurity fundamentals, and object-oriented design, culminating in a senior project or thesis experience.Students also complete elective courses that allow specialization in areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, systems programming, data science, computer graphics, and parallel computing, along with supporting electives from mathematics, information technology, or engineering. A strong mathematics foundation is required through calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics, and mathematical proof courses, along with science requirements in biological and physical sciences. Overall, students must complete approximately 129–130 credits, including general education and discovery requirements, ensuring a balanced education that combines technical depth, analytical thinking, and applied problem-solving skills for professional readiness in computing fields.
