COURSE CURRICULUM
The Latin and Latin Teaching (LLT) option within the Classics major is designed for students who want advanced mastery of the Latin language along with a strong grounding in Roman civilization, literature, and culture, particularly with an emphasis on preparing for careers in education or related fields. The program requires a total of 40 credits and maintains a minimum 2.0 GPA in all major coursework, in addition to university-wide Discovery Program and foreign language proficiency requirements. A central component of the degree is intensive Latin language study, where students complete at least 20 credits of LATN courses at the 504 level or higher. This advanced language training focuses on reading, translating, and interpreting original Roman texts, building the fluency needed for both scholarly work and classroom teaching. Alongside language study, students complete at least three courses (12 credits) focused on Roman mythology and history, choosing from subjects such as Classical Mythology, Introduction to Roman Civilization, Myth and Its Cultural Influence, Ancient Roman History, and specialized topics in Roman historical studies. These courses provide essential cultural and historical context that deepens understanding of Latin literature and the Roman world. In addition, students complete 8 credits of electives, which may include advanced coursework or credit earned through a capstone experience. The program culminates in a capstone requirement, which may be fulfilled through a senior seminar, thesis, honors thesis, supervised practicum, advanced 700-level Latin coursework, an approved internship, or a study abroad experience focused on classical studies. This capstone allows students to synthesize their learning and demonstrate advanced interpretive and analytical skills. Overall, the LLT option provides rigorous preparation for students pursuing careers in Latin education, classical studies, or other fields that value strong analytical thinking, language proficiency, and cultural knowledge.
