COURSE CURRICULUM

The Classical Languages and Literatures (CLL) option within the Classics major is designed for students who want an intensive focus on ancient Greek and Latin while also gaining a broad understanding of classical civilization. This program emphasizes direct engagement with original texts, allowing students to develop strong language proficiency and interpret ancient literature, history, and philosophy in their original form. To complete the major, students must earn 40 credits and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in major coursework.A central requirement of the program is advanced language study. Students complete at least 12 credits at the 503 level or higher in Greek or Latin, with opportunities to take additional language coursework up to 24 credits. Within this requirement, students must complete at least one 700-level course in their primary language (either Greek or Latin), which involves reading and analyzing advanced original texts. They must also complete at least one course at the 504 level or higher in their secondary language, ensuring balanced proficiency in both classical languages.In addition to language study, students complete 16 to 28 credits of non-language coursework in CLAS subjects. These courses explore ancient history, literature, mythology, philosophy, and cultural studies, providing important context for understanding the ancient Mediterranean world. This combination of language and content courses helps students develop both technical linguistic skills and broader cultural and historical knowledge.The program culminates in a capstone experience, which may include a senior seminar (CLAS 701W), a senior or honors thesis, advanced 700-level language study, an approved internship, or a study abroad experience focused on the classical world. This capstone allows students to synthesize their learning through research, writing, or experiential study.Overall, the CLL option provides rigorous training in ancient languages and classical studies, preparing students for graduate programs in classics, teaching, and careers in fields such as law, education, publishing, and cultural heritage.
