COURSE CURRICULUM

The environmental engineering option within chemical engineering is a specialized track that prepares students to apply engineering principles to understanding, controlling, and solving environmental problems caused by industrial and human activities. This program builds on core chemical engineering foundations such as material and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, separation processes, reaction kinetics, and process control, while integrating environmental science and engineering concepts. Students gain the ability to analyze how pollutants are generated, transported, and transformed in air, water, and soil systems, and how these impacts can be reduced through effective engineering design. A key focus of this option is air pollution control, water and wastewater treatment, and the management of solid and hazardous waste, supported by specialized courses like fundamentals of air pollution control, waste management and site remediation, and fate and transport in the environment. These courses help students understand both the scientific behavior of contaminants and the engineering methods used to remove or neutralize them. Laboratory and design experiences allow students to apply theoretical knowledge to real environmental systems, develop monitoring techniques, and evaluate treatment technologies. Elective courses provide further depth in areas such as environmental life cycle assessment, environmental engineering chemistry, microbiology, advanced water treatment processes, corrosion, nanotechnology, and microfluidics, enabling students to explore both traditional and emerging environmental solutions. Strong preparation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and statistics supports the modeling and analysis of complex environmental processes. Graduates of this option are well prepared for careers in environmental consulting, water and wastewater treatment, regulatory agencies, pollution control industries, and sustainable manufacturing sectors, as well as for graduate study. Overall, this option focuses on applying chemical engineering knowledge to protect public health and the environment while promoting sustainable industrial development.
