COURSE CURRICULUM
The bioengineering option within the chemical engineering program is designed for students who want to apply engineering principles to biological systems in order to develop and improve processes used in medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food production, and healthcare. The curriculum builds a strong foundation in core chemical engineering subjects such as material and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, reaction kinetics, process control, and separation processes, ensuring students understand how industrial-scale systems are designed and operated. At the same time, it integrates biological and chemical sciences through courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and specialized biological engineering topics like biochemical engineering, biomaterials, and biomanufacturing. Students also gain hands-on experience through laboratory courses in chemical engineering and physical chemistry, where they learn experimental techniques, data analysis, and safe operation of equipment. A key component of the program is exposure to biotechnology-focused coursework such as bioprocessing, biomaterials, and biomedical engineering, which prepares students to work with living systems such as cells, enzymes, and microorganisms in industrial applications.
