COURSE CURRICULUM

The Animal Science: Equine Studies major at University of New Hampshire is a well-structured program that combines scientific foundations, core animal science knowledge, and specialized equine training, with students required to earn at least a C- grade in all required courses to graduate. The program begins with foundation science courses that include biology, chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, and statistics, ensuring students develop a strong understanding of life sciences and data analysis. Building on this, all students complete core animal science courses such as animal anatomy and physiology, nutrition, genetics, diseases, reproduction, animal ethics, and technical writing, which provide essential knowledge about animal health, function, and responsible management. The equine specialization then introduces focused coursework tailored to horse science and management, including subjects like equine science, ethical horsemanship, conformation and performance, handling and training techniques, forage and grassland management, and stable management. Advanced courses such as equine physiology and lameness deepen students’ understanding of horse health and performance, while courses in event design and management prepare them for roles in the equine industry. A key component of the program is the equine capstone experience, where students apply their knowledge through practical, hands-on work with horses. In addition, students must complete at least eight credits of equine electives, allowing them to customize their education based on career interests, with options such as riding instruction, therapeutic riding, equine-assisted services, sport horse training, and agricultural business management. Overall, the program integrates science, practical training, and industry-focused skills, preparing graduates for careers in equine management, training, education, or further studies in veterinary medicine or advanced equine science fields.
