COURSE CURRICULUM

The AGFS Bachelor of Science program at University of New Hampshire is structured to provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education through four main components: foundation courses, a student-designed emphasis area, electives, and a capstone experience, ensuring both depth and flexibility in learning. Students are required to maintain a minimum grade of C- in all major courses, reflecting the program’s academic standards. The foundation courses make up 49 credits and include essential subjects such as sustainable agriculture, horticulture, agroecology, food systems, animal science, biology, chemistry, biostatistics, soil science, and agricultural policy, while also fulfilling multiple university general education requirements. Beyond this core, students must complete a 20-credit student-designed emphasis area, which allows them to specialize in a particular field of interest by selecting relevant courses in consultation with an advisor and securing approval before their final year. In addition, students are required to complete 16 credits of electives chosen from a diverse list of approved courses covering topics such as urban agriculture, plant pathology, animal nutrition, environmental policy, food science, and community development, providing opportunities to broaden their knowledge and skills. A key academic requirement is that at least 16 credits from the emphasis and elective categories must be completed at the advanced 600 or 700 level, encouraging higher-level academic engagement. The program culminates in a capstone experience during the senior year, where students apply their learning through advanced study or practical projects such as collaborative farm design, and this capstone is counted separately from other credits. With a total of around 89 credits, the program is designed to build strong scientific foundations, practical experience, and critical thinking skills, preparing graduates for careers in sustainable agriculture, food systems management, research, and environmental problem-solving.
