COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music Pre-Teaching program at the combines professional music training with teacher preparation, allowing students to complete a Bachelor of Music degree and continue toward a Master of Arts in Teaching in an accelerated pathway. Students must complete all University Discovery Program requirements along with intensive coursework in music theory, ear training, functional piano, music history, conducting and world music studies. Courses such as Theory I and II, Ear Training, Functional Piano, The Western Musical Canon and Musics in Context build a strong understanding of musical structure, history and analysis, while advanced courses in conducting, score reading and music analysis strengthen technical and leadership skills. Students also complete internships, recital attendance requirements and a senior public performance, with pre-teaching students presenting a half recital as their capstone experience. Performance study and ensemble participation are central parts of the curriculum, with students participating in ensembles such as Symphony, Wind Symphony, Concert Choir, Jazz Band or Marching Band throughout their studies. The pre-teaching curriculum focuses on music education methods and includes courses in choral, string, brass, woodwind and percussion teaching techniques, vocal pedagogy, elementary and secondary music teaching and instrumental music methods. Students also study education and human development through courses such as Exploring Teaching, Educational Perspectives in Critical Times and Human Development and Learning. Vocal and instrumental tracks allow students to specialize according to their interests and career goals. Music majors must earn grades of C- or higher in music courses, and ensemble participation requirements ensure extensive hands-on performance experience. The program emphasizes artistic growth, teaching ability, communication, leadership and classroom preparation. After completing undergraduate coursework, students continue into graduate study and teaching internships leading toward teacher certification. Graduates are prepared for careers as music teachers, choir directors, band directors and arts educators in schools and community settings while also developing strong professional musicianship and educational expertise.
