COURSE CURRICULUM
The theatre major at University of New Hampshire is designed to provide students with a balanced education in performance, theatre history, design and stage technology while encouraging creativity, collaboration and professional development. Students are expected to complete at least two theatre major courses and two Discovery courses each semester during their freshman and sophomore years. To remain in the program, students must earn a minimum grade of C- in all major courses and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 in theatre coursework. The curriculum includes foundational classes such as THDA 436 or THDA 438 in theatre history, THDA 459 Stagecraft, THDA 460 Elements of Design, THDA 551 Acting I and introductory dance courses like Ballet I or Theatre Dance I. Students also complete multiple practicum experiences through THDA 589, gaining hands-on experience in productions, stage operations and performance work. The program requires students to study three major areas: performance, design and theatre technology, and theory/history. Students can choose advanced courses in costume design, lighting, puppetry, directing, musical theatre, playwriting, storytelling and stage management depending on their interests. A digital portfolio is also required to demonstrate artistic and technical growth throughout the degree. Senior students complete a capstone experience through either a Senior Thesis or Capstone Project, helping them apply their skills in a professional-level creative project. The department encourages students to complete introductory theatre courses before the end of sophomore year to build a strong academic foundation. Students may also satisfy the foreign language requirement through American Sign Language courses. The theatre major is flexible enough to combine with another major, making it ideal for students interested in arts, communication, education or media. Through productions, collaborative learning and practical training, the program prepares graduates for careers in acting, directing, stage production, arts management, teaching and entertainment industries while also developing transferable communication and leadership skills.
