COURSE CURRICULUM

The Studio Art major at University of New Hampshire requires students to complete a minimum of 14 courses totaling 56 credits, with at least a C grade in each course and an overall GPA of 2.0, ensuring both academic and creative proficiency. The program begins with core foundation courses such as principles of design, introductory drawing, and introductory sculpture, which build essential skills in visual composition, observation, and three-dimensional thinking. Students then expand their abilities through supplemental coursework by selecting one course each in two-dimensional art, three-dimensional art, and photography, allowing them to explore different artistic media such as printmaking, painting, ceramics, woodworking, or digital photography. A key component of the program is the concentration requirement, where students choose four studio courses at the intermediate to advanced level, primarily at the 600 or 700 level, enabling them to specialize in areas like painting, sculpture, photography, animation, typography, or furniture design while developing a personal artistic style. The curriculum also includes an advanced studio seminar, where students refine their work, engage in critique, and prepare professional portfolios. In addition to studio practice, students must complete art history coursework, including an introductory course and two advanced courses, to understand the historical and cultural context of art.
