COURSE CURRICULUM

The Russian major at University of New Hampshire is designed for students who want to develop advanced language skills while studying Russian literature, history, culture, and society. The program requires completion of at least 10 courses totaling 40 credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA in major coursework. Students are placed into the appropriate Russian language level after consultation with faculty, allowing both beginners and advanced speakers to progress effectively. The language sequence may begin with RUSS 401 Elementary Russian I and RUSS 402 Elementary Russian II, followed by RUSS 503 Intermediate Russian I, RUSS 504 Intermediate Russian II, and advanced communication courses RUSS 631 and RUSS 632 Advanced Russian Conversation and Composition. Students entering at higher proficiency levels can replace skipped language courses with additional electives focused on Russian culture, literature, or linguistics. Elective options include courses such as RUSS 521W Devils, Deities, and Madness in Russian Literature, RUSS 525 Russia: Mythology and Propaganda, RUSS 691W Readings in Russian Literature, and RUSS 733 History of Slavic Languages and Culture. Additional related courses may include comparative literature, film history, language practicum, and foreign language teaching methods. Students also complete LLC 790 World Languages Capstone as the major capstone requirement. Study abroad is a required component of the degree, though another approved international or high-impact experience may substitute with proper justification. The program encourages students to continue using Russian regularly to strengthen fluency and cultural understanding. Through studying Russian and Slavic cultures, students gain communication, analytical thinking, and cross-cultural skills valuable for careers in international relations, diplomacy, translation, journalism, government, intelligence, global business, education, tourism, and nonprofit organizations. The degree also provides excellent preparation for graduate study in international affairs, linguistics, Slavic studies, public policy, or law.
