COURSE CURRICULUM

The psychology major at University of New Hampshire focuses on understanding human and animal behavior, mental processes, emotions, learning, memory, social interaction, and psychological disorders through scientific research methods. Students complete 45 total credits in the major with a minimum grade of C- in each course and a 2.0 GPA overall in psychology coursework. The program begins with foundational courses including PSYC 401 Introduction to Psychology, PSYC 402 Statistics in Psychology, and PSYC 502 Research Methods in Psychology, giving students strong analytical and research skills. Students then choose breadth courses from two major areas. Group I emphasizes cognitive and biological psychology through courses such as Cognitive Psychology, Psychobiology, Sensation and Perception, and Behavior Analysis, while Group II focuses on social and developmental topics such as Social Psychology, Personality, Psychopathology, and Child Development. Advanced 700-level depth courses allow specialization in areas like Brain and Behavior, Drugs and Behavior, Psychology of Crime and Justice, Counseling, Health Psychology, Emotion, Consciousness, Happiness, and Sport Psychology. Students also complete a senior capstone through an internship, independent study, honors thesis, or advanced seminar. The degree prepares students for careers and graduate study in counseling, clinical psychology, law, healthcare, education, human resources, criminal justice, neuroscience, research, and social services. A strong feature of the program is its emphasis on scientific thinking, statistics, research design, and practical application of psychology to real-world human problems.
