COURSE CURRICULUM

The international security option in the political science program at the focuses on understanding war, global conflict, foreign policy and modern threats to peace and human security. Students explore important global issues such as terrorism, ethnic violence, nuclear weapons, pandemics, climate change, political instability and the growing impact of technology on warfare and international relations. The program requires at least 10 courses totaling 40 credits, with a minimum grade of C- in each course and a 2.0 GPA in major coursework. Students begin with introductory courses in American politics, comparative politics, international affairs and political society, then complete advanced 500-level courses from different political science subfields including American politics, political thought, comparative politics and international politics. A required course in international security gives students specialized knowledge about global defense, strategy and conflict. Students can further focus their studies through electives such as Strategy and National Security Policy, International Security in Asia, Drug Wars, Politics of the Middle East, Revolution and Protest in Latin America, and The Rise of China. The program also includes a senior capstone course that develops advanced research, analytical and communication skills through seminars focused on international and comparative politics. Students learn how governments, institutions and political systems respond to global challenges while gaining a strong understanding of diplomacy, democracy, authoritarianism, global economics and security policy. The degree prepares graduates for careers in government agencies, intelligence and defense organizations, diplomacy, international relations, journalism, public policy, law, nonprofit organizations and graduate studies. Through critical thinking, research and policy analysis, students build the knowledge and skills needed to understand and address some of the world’s most complex political and security challenges.
