COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Arts in Physics at the University of New Hampshire Physics Program provides students with a strong foundation in physics, mathematics, computation, and experimental science while maintaining the flexibility of a liberal arts education. Students complete between 70 and 76 credits in physics and mathematics, studying major areas such as mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, electricity and magnetism, computational physics, and experimental laboratory methods. The program begins with introductory physics and calculus courses, followed by advanced coursework in classical mechanics, statistical mechanics, quantum theory, and electromagnetism. Students also develop programming and computational skills through scientific programming in Python and computational physics recitations, preparing them for technical problem-solving and data analysis in scientific and industrial settings. Laboratory experience is an important component of the curriculum, with students completing advanced experimental physics courses that strengthen research, measurement, and analytical abilities. Mathematics requirements include calculus, differential equations, multidimensional calculus, and linear algebra, providing the mathematical foundation necessary for advanced physics study. During the senior year, all students complete a capstone experience, which may involve independent research, a senior thesis, or a specialized experimental project approved by the department. This capstone allows students to apply their scientific knowledge and research skills to an advanced topic of personal interest. Compared to the Bachelor of Science degree, the B.A. program offers more flexibility for students who want to combine physics with other fields such as education, computer science, philosophy, mathematics, biology, business, or pre-professional studies like medicine or law. The program develops strong critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, research, and technical communication skills that are valuable in many careers. Graduates are prepared for opportunities in education, technology, scientific research support, engineering-related industries, computing, healthcare, public policy, and graduate or professional schools. Overall, the program balances rigorous scientific training with broader academic exploration, making it suitable for students seeking both technical knowledge and interdisciplinary learning.
