COURSE CURRICULUM

The History/Law 3+3 option at UNH allows students to complete the standard History B.A. requirements while progressing toward a J.D., but the undergraduate portion still fully follows the history major structure. Students must complete ten history courses totaling 40 credits, including HIST 500 (Introduction to Historical Thinking) taken early in the program and HIST 797 (Colloquium) in the senior year, which serves as the capstone and focuses on advanced historical research and writing. In addition to these required courses, students take at least eight additional history courses, with limits on distribution that ensure both depth and breadth: no more than two courses may be at the 400 level, and at least three must be at the 600 level or above. The curriculum is structured around an area of specialization, where students concentrate on a historical theme such as international relations, cultural history, war and society, or science and technology, taking at least four courses in that focus area. Students must also complete complementary courses outside their specialization, including at least one course each in American, European, and global or other history categories to ensure a broad historical perspective. The program must be carefully planned with an academic advisor and formally approved, usually by the junior year. Additional requirements include maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0 in history courses, earning at least a C in HIST 500 and a C- in all other history courses, and completing foreign language proficiency in a research-relevant language such as French, Spanish, German, or others approved by the department. Transfer and independent study credits are limited, and most coursework must be completed at UNH. Overall, this structure ensures that students in the 3+3 track receive the same rigorous historical training as traditional majors while preparing efficiently for law school admission and advanced legal study.
