COURSE CURRICULUM

The English major option in Text, Business Writing, and Digital Studies requires students to complete eleven courses totaling 44 credits, with each course passed at a minimum grade of C- and an overall structured distribution that ensures both depth and flexibility, while also limiting students to counting only one online course toward the major and excluding certain courses such as ENGL 403, ENGL 415, and ENGL 444 from fulfilling requirements, with the added allowance that one major course may satisfy a Discovery category requirement; the program begins with the foundational ENGL 419 course, which must be completed with at least a C grade and develops essential analytical reading skills, followed by one introductory 500-level course focused on writing or communication, such as creative nonfiction, persuasive writing, or professional and technical writing, including advanced options like ENGL 602 that emphasize digital and workplace writing skills; students must then complete three advanced ENGL courses at the 600 level or above, with an emphasis on incorporating digital humanities, digital production, or research components into their coursework, ensuring they gain modern technical and analytical expertise; the curriculum also requires two courses in pre-1800 literature and two in post-1800 literature, providing strong historical coverage of literary traditions, along with one course specifically focused on race, racial construction, and related theories to deepen cultural and social understanding; the program culminates in a capstone internship course, ENGL 796, where students apply their writing, communication, and analytical skills in a real-world professional setting, gaining practical experience in collaboration, presentations, and workplace writing, while simultaneously completing a digital portfolio consisting of at least six polished projects and a reflective essay, showcasing their abilities in digital media, communication, and critical thinking; overall, the program integrates traditional literary study with modern digital and professional skills, preparing students for diverse careers by combining academic rigor, creative expression, and hands-on experience.
