COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Education requires completion of 52 credits within the major, with each course completed with a minimum grade of B- and an overall GPA of at least 3.0 in major coursework, reflecting the program’s strong academic expectations. The curriculum begins with foundational courses totaling 24 credits, which introduce students to key concepts such as educational systems in local and global contexts, teaching as a profession, language and linguistic diversity, critical perspectives on education, family and community partnerships, and human development or child development, providing a comprehensive base for understanding education from social, cultural, and developmental viewpoints. Students then complete additional required coursework, including one course focused on themes such as education and poverty or race in teaching and learning, helping them explore equity and social justice issues in education. Supporting communities coursework requires two electives selected in consultation with an advisor, allowing students to study areas like linguistics, disability studies, mentoring, inclusive education, or social justice, and may also include interdisciplinary subjects such as psychology, gender studies, or the arts. The curriculum and methods component includes two courses focused on practical teaching approaches, such as classroom management, literacy instruction, inclusive education, multilingual learning, or subject-specific teaching methods, helping students understand instructional design and learning environments. Finally, students complete a culminating experience through a research-focused course or independent study, where they apply their knowledge, reflect on their learning, and develop professional skills.
