COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Earth Sciences requires students to complete a structured yet flexible set of courses totaling approximately 70–74 major credits within a broader 128-credit degree, with a minimum grade of C- required in all major coursework. The program begins with core Earth science courses such as Dynamic Earth or Geology and the Environment, along with options like Earth History, Oceanography, Global Environmental Change, Solar System studies, or Environmental Science, providing a broad introduction to Earth systems. Students also complete courses in mineralogy or soils and landscape evolution, building a strong understanding of Earth materials and surface processes. At the advanced level, students must take three upper-level Earth Sciences courses, including at least two at the 700 level, along with one additional approved course, allowing them to deepen knowledge in specialized areas of interest. Supporting coursework in mathematics and science includes Calculus I and a second quantitative course such as Calculus II, statistics, biostatistics, or data science, along with General Chemistry, ensuring a solid analytical and scientific foundation. The program also includes professional development courses such as a first-year experience and a capstone preparation course, culminating in a capstone experience during the senior year where students apply their knowledge through research, internships, fieldwork, or related projects. Students must also complete additional general electives to reach the total credit requirement, providing significant flexibility to explore other disciplines or complement the major with minors or double majors. Overall, the program balances core scientific training with elective freedom, preparing students for careers in education, environmental fields, public service, or further study.
