COURSE CURRICULUM

The Art History major at University of New Hampshire requires students to complete at least 10 courses totaling 40 credits, along with a capstone course, while maintaining a minimum grade of C- in each course and an overall GPA of 2.0 in the major. The program begins with introductory coursework, where students choose from a range of entry-level classes that explore key themes such as global art, architectural history, Renaissance culture, or the relationship between art and society, providing a broad foundation in visual and cultural analysis. Students also complete a studio-based drawing course, which helps develop practical understanding of artistic techniques and visual perception, along with an advanced seminar that strengthens research and analytical skills. The curriculum is structured around major historical periods, requiring students to take at least one course each in Pre-Renaissance, Renaissance/Baroque, and Modern Art, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of how art has evolved over time. In addition, students select three elective courses from these same areas, allowing them to deepen their knowledge in specific periods or themes based on their interests. Only one course at the 500 level may count toward these requirements, encouraging engagement with more advanced coursework. The program concludes with a capstone course, where students integrate their learning through in-depth analysis, research, and critical interpretation of art and its historical context. Throughout the degree, students develop skills in visual analysis, critical thinking, research, and communication, which are valuable for careers in museums, galleries, cultural institutions, and other fields, as well as for further study in disciplines such as law, business, or architecture.
