ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of New Hampshire (UNH) is a major public land-grant research university in the United States, founded in 1866 and later relocated to Durham in 1893 before adopting its current name in 1923. It operates as the flagship institution of the University System of New Hampshire and includes multiple campuses such as Durham, Manchester, and its law school in Concord. With over 15,000 students, UNH is the largest public university system in the state and is classified among R1 institutions, indicating very high research activity. The university originated from the Morrill Act of 1862, which enabled the creation of agricultural and mechanical colleges, and its early development was closely linked with Dartmouth College. Over time, it expanded significantly, adding residential facilities, academic buildings, and research infrastructure, guided by architects like Charles Eliot. Academically, UNH offers more than 100 majors across multiple colleges, including engineering, business, liberal arts, health sciences, and marine science, with strong programs in oceanography due to its coastal location.
