COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Humanities program at University of Colorado Denver is a 36-credit interdisciplinary graduate degree designed to help students build advanced expertise across multiple fields in the humanities while tailoring their studies to specific academic or professional interests. The curriculum includes three required interdisciplinary seminars totaling 9 credits: Foundations and Theories in Interdisciplinary Humanities, Methods and Practices in Graduate Interdisciplinary Humanities, and Directed Research and Readings in Interdisciplinary Humanities. In addition, students complete 21 to 24 credit hours of coursework selected in consultation with a faculty advisor, allowing for a highly individualized program of study that integrates multiple disciplines. The degree culminates in either a 3-credit final project or a 6-credit thesis, both of which must be scholarly or creative in nature and involve at least two academic disciplines, emphasizing the program’s focus on interdisciplinary synthesis and applied humanities research. Students also have the option to pursue structured concentration tracks, which allow them to deepen expertise in specific thematic areas such as Ethnic Studies, Health Humanities, Philosophy and Theory, Social Justice, Visual Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies. These tracks combine the core interdisciplinary requirements with additional focused coursework, enabling students to develop both breadth and depth within a chosen field of inquiry. The program is designed to support students who already have prior academic preparation in related fields and want to advance their knowledge through a flexible, research-oriented graduate experience. Overall, the Master of Humanities emphasizes critical thinking, interdisciplinary analysis, and advanced research or creative practice, preparing graduates for careers in education, cultural work, public service, nonprofit leadership, writing, and further academic study.
