COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Political Science at University of Colorado Denver offers two flexible 33-credit pathways that allow students to choose between a traditional research-focused degree or a more applied professional track depending on their academic and career goals. Both plans require students to complete at least 16 credit hours within the Political Science Department and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. The curriculum begins with core seminar coursework including The State of the Discipline and Research Methods, along with graduate seminars in American politics, comparative politics or international relations, and political theory. These foundational courses help students build advanced analytical, research, writing, and policy evaluation skills while developing a broad understanding of political systems and political science scholarship. Students pursuing Plan 1 complete a six-credit master’s thesis, which emphasizes independent academic research and is particularly suited for those considering doctoral studies or research-oriented careers. Students selecting Plan 2 complete a three-credit applied project and additional electives, creating a more practice-oriented pathway focused on leadership, policy, and professional application. The Project Plan is also available through the Center for New Directions in addition to the Downtown Campus, providing additional accessibility and flexibility for students. Elective coursework allows students to customize their degree with advanced political science seminars, internships, independent studies, and selected courses from other departments. Students may complete limited credits through internships, interdisciplinary coursework, and independent studies to broaden professional and academic experience while maintaining a strong political science foundation. The program also permits a limited number of transfer or non-degree credits to apply toward the degree. Graduates develop strong capabilities in political analysis, research methodology, policy evaluation, leadership, and communication, preparing them for careers in government, nonprofit organizations, advocacy, consulting, public policy, education, international affairs, and doctoral programs. Overall, the program combines academic rigor, practical flexibility, and specialized political science training to support both professional advancement and advanced scholarly development.
