COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in English Studies at University of Colorado Denver is a flexible 30–33 credit graduate program designed to develop advanced skills in literary analysis, writing, cultural studies, linguistics, rhetoric, and critical theory while preparing students for careers in teaching, writing, editing, research, and doctoral study. The curriculum includes 18 credit hours of core coursework that introduces students to graduate-level English studies through subjects such as linguistics and global Englishes, critical and cultural theory, genre and culture, technologies of writing, and creative writing workshop and pedagogy. These courses help students strengthen their analytical thinking, research abilities, communication skills, and understanding of language, literature, culture, and writing practices across diverse contexts. Students also complete 9 credit hours of electives, allowing them to tailor the degree toward individual academic or professional interests by concentrating in a specific area of English studies. The program concludes with a capstone experience in which students either complete a Portfolio Exam or pursue a Master’s Thesis involving advanced independent research and scholarly writing. Additional opportunities support professional and academic development throughout the program. Graduate students serving as teaching assistants complete a practicum in language and rhetoric during their first semester, gaining practical teaching and classroom experience that may also count toward elective credit requirements. Students may also complete limited independent study coursework to explore specialized topics with faculty guidance. The program emphasizes critical inquiry, creative and academic writing, communication, and interdisciplinary exploration while preparing graduates for careers in education, publishing, nonprofit organizations, corporate communication, editing, and professional writing. It also provides strong preparation for competitive PhD programs and advanced academic research.
