COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Economics at University of Colorado Denver is a STEM-designated graduate program that emphasizes advanced training in empirical research, quantitative analysis, econometrics, forecasting, and data-driven economic modeling to prepare students for careers in industry, government, consulting, finance, and doctoral study. The 30-credit curriculum combines rigorous theoretical foundations with practical application and can be completed in as few as three semesters, although many working professionals finish in four or five semesters. All courses are offered in the evening, allowing students to balance graduate studies with full-time employment. Core coursework includes Mathematical Economics, Microeconomic Theory, Macroeconomic Theory, Econometrics I and II, Applied Economics Seminars, and a Research Seminar where students complete an independent empirical research project under faculty mentorship instead of a traditional thesis. The program strongly focuses on working with large and diverse data sets, using statistical software, and applying econometric techniques to solve real-world economic problems. Students also complete elective coursework in areas such as labor economics, public finance, economic growth and development, health economics, international trade, economic forecasting, and data analysis. In addition, the program offers dual-degree opportunities in Finance, Applied Mathematics, and Public Administration, allowing students to customize their education to fit specific career goals. Graduates develop the ability to build and evaluate theoretical and statistical economic models, identify causal relationships using data analysis, and communicate complex findings effectively to both professional and public audiences. The program has a strong record of graduate success, with students continuing to top PhD programs including Harvard, Stanford, UC San Diego, and Michigan State, while others secure careers with consulting firms, healthcare agencies, financial institutions, government offices, energy companies, and defense contractors. Students from participating WICHE states may also qualify for in-state tuition benefits.
