COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at University of Colorado Denver offers a flexible and comprehensive curriculum that allows students to tailor their education according to personal interests and career goals while gaining broad exposure to major areas of modern computing. Students study diverse topics including machine learning, data science, computer graphics, game design, programming, software engineering, systems development, scientific computing, cybersecurity, secure computing, computational theory, and cyber-physical systems. The program emphasizes both strong theoretical foundations and practical problem-solving skills, preparing students to work in rapidly evolving technology industries. A key feature of the curriculum is the senior-year capstone experience, where students collaborate on complex software engineering projects for industry partners or research initiatives, helping them apply technical knowledge to real-world challenges while strengthening teamwork, communication, and project management skills. To earn the degree, students complete 128 credit hours, including 24 credits in the CU Denver Core Curriculum, which develops general education and communication abilities, along with 22 credit hours in mathematics and basic sciences that provide analytical and technical foundations. Students also complete engineering design coursework and extensive computer science core courses covering programming, algorithms, systems, and software development principles. Additional breadth courses and technical electives allow students to specialize in areas aligned with their interests, such as artificial intelligence, gaming, cybersecurity, or advanced software systems.
