COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at University of Colorado Denver is a 130-credit program designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills across the major areas of civil engineering. The curriculum emphasizes six core disciplines: structural engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, hydrology and hydraulics, and construction engineering. Students begin with the CU Denver Core Curriculum, completing 24 credit hours that strengthen communication, critical thinking, and general education skills. The program also includes at least 33 credit hours in mathematics and basic sciences, building a strong technical foundation in subjects such as calculus, physics, and engineering science. Design education is a key part of the curriculum, with a minimum of 12 credit hours dedicated to engineering design courses that help students apply theoretical knowledge to real-world infrastructure and construction challenges. In addition, students complete at least 61 credit hours of civil engineering core coursework, including elective courses that allow them to explore specialized interests within the field. The curriculum combines classroom learning with practical applications, preparing students to analyze, design, construct, and maintain transportation systems, water resources, environmental systems, and structural projects. Hybrid courses within the program include regular on-campus meetings, in-person examinations, and a majority of course content delivered face-to-face to maintain strong hands-on and collaborative learning experiences. The program develops technical expertise, analytical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities necessary for careers in infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, construction management, transportation systems, and public works engineering, while also preparing graduates for professional engineering licensure and advanced graduate studies.
