COURSE CURRICULUM

University of Colorado Denver offers several flexible degree pathways in Geography and Environmental Science that allow students to tailor their education according to their interests in environmental studies, urban planning, sustainability, geographic analysis, and global issues. The department also provides international learning opportunities such as a Study Abroad Maymester program in Singapore, where students can gain cultural and academic experiences through field-based learning. Students may choose from four degree options, each offering specialized coursework and practical training. The Geography BA requires 45 credit hours and includes topics such as physical geography, environmental sciences, human geography, world regions, mapping and map analysis, weather and climate, globalization, and regional development while offering the greatest flexibility in elective choices. The Geography, Urban Studies and Planning pathway includes 39 core credit hours focused on urban geography, urban sustainability, urban analysis, and planning within Denver and broader urban environments. The Geography Environment, Society, and Sustainability BA also includes 39 core credit hours emphasizing environmental issues, sustainability, environmental analysis, climate, globalization, and the relationship between society and the environment. Students seeking a stronger science-based focus may pursue the Geography Environmental Studies degree, which requires 45 core credit hours and includes environmental science, sustainability in resource management, geospatial analysis, environmental studies with laboratory work, and additional biology or chemistry coursework. Alongside major requirements, students complete the CU Denver Core Curriculum covering English, mathematics, sciences, humanities, social sciences, international perspectives, and cultural diversity. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences core courses further develop skills in scientific writing, humanities, psychology, anthropology, sociology, economics, and second-language study. Some students may also need foreign language coursework depending on prior experience. Overall, the programs combine academic theory, environmental awareness, technical mapping skills, global perspectives, and hands-on learning to prepare students for careers in sustainability, environmental management, urban planning, geographic information systems, research, and public policy.
