COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Childhood Education, Special Education, and Literacy at the University at Albany is designed to prepare aspiring teachers without prior certification to effectively work with exceptional children in inclusive elementary classrooms. The curriculum combines comprehensive academic coursework with intensive practicum and internship experiences, ensuring that students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching skills. Students study key topics such as child development and learning, teaching literacy to diverse learners, and curriculum development and classroom management, all of which are essential for creating supportive and effective learning environments. The program also includes practica in literacy instruction and special education, allowing students to apply instructional strategies in real classroom settings while gaining experience in working with students who have varied learning needs. A major component of the program is the full-time clinical internship with an integrated seminar, where students receive supervised, hands-on experience teaching students with disabilities in educational settings. This internship is supported by a seminar that addresses practical challenges and provides guidance to help students succeed in their fieldwork. In addition, students complete a master’s project that demonstrates their ability to apply research and instructional methods to real educational issues. The program also requires completion of New York State Education Department (NYSED) training requirements, including Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Act (SAVE), Child Abuse Identification and Reporting, Needs of Students with Autism, and the Dignity for All Students Act. After completing all requirements, students must request that the University recommend them to the New York State Department of Education in order to obtain professional certification. Overall, the program prepares graduates to become skilled, reflective, and inclusive educators capable of meeting the diverse needs of students while promoting equity and academic success in elementary education.
