COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Nanoscale Science at University at Albany (UAlbany) is a highly interdisciplinary graduate program designed to train students in the fundamental principles and advanced applications of nanoscale materials, structures, and systems. Because students enter from a wide range of scientific backgrounds, the program begins with a structured Foundations of Nanotechnology sequence that builds essential core competencies needed for success in nanoscale science and engineering. This includes Chemical Principles of Nanotechnology along with a progressive four-course series in Foundations of Nanotechnology I, II, III, and IV, which collectively establish a strong theoretical understanding of nanoscale phenomena, material behavior, and scientific principles. After completing this foundational sequence, students advance into specialized nanoscale science coursework tailored to one of seven available tracks, allowing them to focus their studies on areas aligned with their academic interests and career goals. Students complete at least six credits in nanoscale science courses selected in consultation with an advisor, ensuring flexibility and depth in their chosen specialization. A major component of the program is master’s-level research, where students either engage in independent research in nanoscale science or complete a formal thesis in Nanosciences and Nanoengineering. This research experience allows students to apply theoretical knowledge to real scientific problems and contribute to ongoing advancements in the field. In addition, students complete three credits of seminar or approved external coursework to further develop professional and academic expertise. Overall, the program provides a strong combination of foundational training, specialized coursework, and intensive research experience, preparing graduates for careers in advanced scientific research, high-technology industries, and doctoral study in nanoscale science and related fields.
