COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Nanoscale Engineering at University at Albany (UAlbany) is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to prepare students for advanced work in nanotechnology, materials science, and emerging engineering fields by combining strong foundational training with research-intensive specialization. Because nanoscale engineering draws students from diverse scientific backgrounds, the program begins with a structured Foundations of Nanotechnology course sequence that builds essential competencies across chemistry and nanoscale systems. This sequence includes Chemical Principles of Nanotechnology along with a four-part progression of Foundations of Nanotechnology I, II, III, and IV, which collectively establish a deep understanding of nanoscale phenomena, material behavior, and engineering principles. After completing the foundational sequence, students advance into nanoscale engineering coursework tailored to one of several specialized tracks, completing at least six credits in areas aligned with their academic and professional interests. These track-based courses allow students to focus on specific applications of nanotechnology in fields such as electronics, materials science, or biomedical engineering. A major component of the program is master’s-level research, where students engage in either directed research in nanoscale science or complete a formal thesis in Nanosciences and Nanoengineering, providing hands-on experience in solving real scientific and engineering problems. In addition, students complete a seminar or approved external course worth three credits, which supports professional development and exposure to current advancements in the field. Overall, the program is designed to build both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills, preparing graduates for careers in high-technology industries, scientific research, and doctoral study in nanoscale science and engineering.
