COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science in Nanobioscience at University at Albany (UAlbany) is an interdisciplinary graduate program that provides advanced training in the design, manipulation, and application of nanomaterials for biological and biomedical purposes. The program focuses on understanding how materials such as metals, semiconductors, polymers, and biological compounds behave at the nanoscale and how they can be engineered into functional systems for use in medicine, diagnostics, sensors, and integrated optical technologies. Students gain expertise in integrating, processing, testing, and validating nanomaterials within micro- and nanoscale systems, with applications that span biotechnology, healthcare, and advanced engineering systems. Because nanoscience is highly interdisciplinary, the program begins with a foundational sequence designed to build essential competencies across chemistry, physics, and engineering principles. This includes Chemical Principles of Nanotechnology and a four-course sequence in Foundations of Nanotechnology (I–IV), which collectively provide a strong theoretical and technical base for understanding nanoscale systems. Students then specialize through six credits of nanobioscience courses selected in consultation with an advisor, allowing them to align their studies with specific research or career interests. The program places strong emphasis on research experience, requiring students to complete either a master’s-level research project or a formal thesis in Nanosciences and Nanoengineering. In addition, students take a seminar or approved external course to further develop professional and academic expertise. Overall, the program equips graduates with interdisciplinary scientific knowledge and hands-on research skills, preparing them for careers in nanotechnology, biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, materials science, and advanced engineering, as well as for further doctoral study in related scientific fields.
