COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Literacy at University at Albany (UAlbany) is a 30-credit graduate program designed for certified teachers who want to specialize in literacy instruction and earn advanced certification in New York State. The program strengthens educators’ ability to teach reading and writing across grade levels while preparing them to become literacy specialists who can support students, teachers, and schools in improving literacy outcomes. The curriculum includes 27 credits of required coursework focused on evidence-based literacy instruction and classroom practice. Core courses such as Classroom Literacy Instruction, Academic Literacy Across Instructional Contexts (5–12), and Literature for Children and Young Adults provide foundational knowledge in reading development, text analysis, and instructional strategies. A major component of the program is its practicum sequence, which includes Instruction to Prevent Literacy Difficulties, Writing in the Classroom, Differentiated Instruction, and Literacy Coaching experiences. These supervised field-based courses allow students to apply instructional strategies directly in classroom settings, work with diverse learners, and develop skills in assessment-driven instruction. Additional required coursework includes Data-Based Decision Making: Linking Literacy Assessments and Instruction, ensuring that graduates are able to use assessment data to guide teaching practices effectively. Students also complete 3 credits of electives, choosing from areas such as Literacy in Society, Early Literacy Development, Integrated Literacy Instruction (B–6), and Literacy for English Language Learners, or other advisor-approved courses. The program is specifically designed for working educators, with all classes offered in the evening to accommodate full-time teaching schedules. Graduates are prepared for careers as literacy specialists, instructional coaches, and advanced classroom educators, and the program also fulfills requirements for both initial literacy certification and professional certification in New York State, making it a strong pathway for career advancement in education.
