COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in General Education Studies at University at Albany (UAlbany) offers a flexible and customizable program of study designed to help educators meet professional certification requirements while deepening their expertise in both content knowledge and teaching practice. The curriculum is structured to balance theoretical understanding, subject specialization, and applied research.The program begins with a 3-credit course in Educational and Social Thought, where students explore either macrosociology or microsociology of education and leadership. This component helps educators understand how broader social systems and classroom-level interactions influence teaching and learning.A key requirement is the completion of 12 credits in content area courses, where students take four graduate-level classes in their original certification subject through the College of Arts and Sciences. This ensures they strengthen their subject-matter expertise, whether in mathematics, science, English, or another discipline, aligning with New York State certification standards.Students then complete 12 credits of concentration courses within the School of Education. This portion of the program is highly flexible, allowing educators to design their own concentration based on professional interests such as curriculum development, instructional strategies, or educational leadership. This customization enables students to tailor their learning to their specific career goals.The program concludes with a 3-credit research seminar, where students choose between a critical introduction to educational research paradigms or a research-in-practice course.
