COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Epidemiology at University at Albany (UAlbany) offers a rigorous and research-focused program of study designed to build strong analytical and public health expertise. The curriculum begins with core courses such as Principles and Methods of Epidemiology I and II, Principles of Public Health, and Quantitative Methods in Epidemiology, which provide a solid foundation in disease investigation and population health analysis. Students also develop advanced data skills through coursework in statistical inference and computer programming for data management and analysis.The program allows flexibility through electives, where students can choose courses from epidemiology, biomedical sciences, environmental health sciences, biological sciences, anthropology, or biometry and statistics. Some electives can also be taken at Albany Medical College, offering additional interdisciplinary opportunities. This structure enables students to tailor their studies to specific interests such as infectious disease, chronic illness, or environmental health.A key component of the program is the epidemiology field placement, where students apply their knowledge to real-world research projects. Many students gain hands-on experience through collaborations with the New York State Department of Health, particularly at the Wadsworth Center, as well as other research initiatives like the Cancer Research Center and the Center for Health Workforce Studies. The program also offers connections with biotechnology firms located on the Health Sciences Campus, expanding opportunities in the private sector.The degree culminates in a master’s thesis, where students conduct in-depth research and demonstrate their analytical and investigative skills. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and research institutions, with roles such as epidemiological data analyst, infection control epidemiologist, field epidemiologist, pharmaceutical epidemiologist, and public health liaison.
