COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s program in Cybersecurity and Risk at University at Albany (UAlbany) is a 36-credit, career-focused graduate degree designed to prepare students for advanced roles in cybersecurity, risk management, and information protection. The program is structured to combine technical expertise with policy, compliance, and strategic decision-making skills, and it concludes with a 3–6 credit internship or thesis that allows students to solve real-world cybersecurity challenges. Students have the flexibility to study full-time or part-time, with options available in online, in-person, or hybrid formats, making it accessible for both working professionals and full-time students.The program offers two primary concentration paths. The Cyber Risk Management & Compliance concentration focuses on the technical and operational aspects of cybersecurity, including network security, application security, threat analysis, digital forensics, and security operations. The Cybersecurity & Privacy of Health Information concentration emphasizes non-technical areas such as cybersecurity policy, risk governance, compliance, legal frameworks, and the protection of sensitive health data.The core curriculum includes 21 credits of foundational coursework covering areas such as advanced networking and security, information security and privacy, human aspects of cybersecurity, and information security compliance auditing. Students also select additional electives from topics like cybersecurity risk and policy, IT and homeland security, computer and network security, and long-term cybersecurity planning. These courses build a strong understanding of both technical systems and organizational risk environments.Graduates of the program are prepared for high-demand careers such as cybersecurity analyst, security manager, IT project manager, emergency management director, and document control specialist. Overall, the program equips students with the technical, analytical, and leadership skills needed to design, manage, and evaluate cybersecurity strategies in complex organizational settings.
