COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Computer Science program at University at Albany (UAlbany) is structured to provide advanced training in both theoretical foundations and practical applications of computing. The degree requires a minimum of 31 credits, with at least 25 credits completed within the Department of Computer Science. Over the course of the program, students complete core computer science courses, approved electives within or outside the department, and specialized coursework aligned with one of three concentration areas. The program is typically completed within one year of focused study.Students choose one concentration to deepen their expertise. The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning track includes subjects such as data mining, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, focusing on intelligent systems and data-driven decision-making. The Systems concentration covers areas like operating systems, database systems, and computer communications networks, emphasizing the design and management of complex computing infrastructures. The Theoretical Computer Science concentration explores foundational topics such as probability and computing, automata and computation theory, and advanced programming concepts, strengthening analytical and problem-solving abilities.A key requirement of the program is a master’s project or thesis, which involves the design and implementation of a significant computer program. This project may also take the form of a department-approved internship in the public or private sector, providing valuable real-world experience. Through this combination of coursework, specialization, and applied research, students develop the technical and analytical skills needed for careers in software development, systems engineering, data science, and advanced computing research.
