COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Chemistry program at University at Albany (UAlbany) offers a flexible and research-intensive program of study that allows students to specialize in areas such as forensic and analytical chemistry, biophysical and biochemical chemistry, organic and medicinal chemistry, inorganic and materials chemistry, or structural and computational chemistry. The curriculum is designed to provide both theoretical depth and practical expertise, helping students understand the mathematical and physical foundations of chemistry while also developing strong experimental and analytical skills. Students begin with fundamental courses such as Inorganic Chemistry, Advanced Physical Chemistry, and Theory and Techniques of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, before progressing into more specialized subjects aligned with their chosen concentration.The program requires a minimum of 30 credits, including 21 to 26 credits in chemistry courses. Students must complete at least five graduate-level, letter-graded courses, with two courses in their specialization area and others selected from advanced topics like physical organic chemistry or biophysical chemistry. A significant portion of the program is dedicated to research, where students engage in chemical research projects that lead either to a written thesis or a critical review of scientific literature, along with additional experimental or theoretical investigations. Supporting courses in related disciplines may also be included based on academic guidance.Students are expected to complete coursework within the first six semesters, followed by a major field examination that assesses their knowledge and can be attempted up to two times. Additionally, a research tool requirement may be fulfilled through specialized courses such as computational chemistry, crystallography, or enzymatic kinetics. The program culminates in a mentored, hands-on research thesis, ensuring graduates develop strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills necessary for advanced careers in chemistry and related scientific fields.
