COURSE CURRICULUM

The MS in Biodiversity, Conservation, and Policy at the University at Albany combines academic study with hands-on research and professional experience to prepare students for impactful careers in environmental protection. A central component of the program is the flexible research requirement, which can be fulfilled through independent study, faculty-led research, internship projects, or a combination of these. Students often engage in projects such as field and laboratory studies of species, data analysis for conservation organizations, or evaluations of environmental policies in New York State.The program is strengthened by a wide range of internship opportunities that provide real-world experience. Students have worked with organizations such as Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, and the U.S. Geological Survey, among others. These placements allow students to contribute to biodiversity conservation efforts while building professional networks and practical skills.The required coursework includes foundational classes in biodiversity and conservation biology, focusing on both theoretical and policy perspectives, along with training in responsible research practices and scientific communication. Students also take courses in policy and planning, choosing from subjects such as environmental policy or public policy seminars, and develop technical skills through tool-based courses like geographic information systems or remote sensing.In addition, students complete three supporting courses, including electives tailored to their interests, with graduate-level statistics strongly recommended to enhance analytical capabilities. Overall, the program integrates science, policy, and practical experience, equipping graduates to address environmental challenges and contribute to conservation efforts at local, national, and global levels
