COURSE CURRICULUM

The MS in Accounting program at the University at Albany follows a structured two-year curriculum that gradually builds both foundational knowledge and advanced expertise in accounting and business. In the first year, students focus on introductory accounting courses alongside essential business subjects such as economics, marketing, financial management, organizational behavior, and operations management. These courses provide a broad understanding of how businesses operate while developing key analytical, managerial, and communication skills. Students also gain practical competencies through training in quantitative analysis and tools like advanced Excel with Visual Basic for Applications, which are widely used in the accounting profession.In the second year, the program shifts toward advanced accounting concepts, where students study financial accounting theory in depth across multiple levels, along with specialized areas such as cost analysis, taxation, auditing, and internal controls. The curriculum also explores financial information systems and contemporary developments in accounting, ensuring students stay updated with current industry practices and emerging trends. A research seminar is included to strengthen critical thinking and allow students to apply their knowledge to complex accounting issues. Additionally, students can choose an accounting elective to further tailor their expertise.To enroll in the program, applicants must hold an undergraduate degree and complete prerequisite coursework in statistics, economics, computer science, and financial accounting. Depending on prior academic experience, students may be able to waive up to 10 credits.
