COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Health Sciences MPH at University at Albany (UAlbany) offers a comprehensive and practice-oriented program of study that blends public health fundamentals with specialized environmental science training. Students build a strong foundation through core courses covering biological aspects of public health, environmental health, epidemiology, statistics, healthcare systems, social and behavioral health, and professional public health practice. These courses develop essential skills in understanding population health, analyzing data, and addressing public health challenges.The program also includes additional required courses that deepen expertise in environmental health sciences. Students study environmental chemistry, toxicology, and risk assessment to understand how environmental exposures affect human health. Advanced training in epidemiology, statistical inference, and computer programming enhances their ability to analyze complex datasets. Courses such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and public health further equip students with modern tools to map and assess environmental risks and health outcomes.Electives allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, while the Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) serves as a capstone project where students demonstrate their ability to apply knowledge and skills in a comprehensive written work. A major strength of the program is its emphasis on hands-on experience through professional internships. Students complete internships in at least two different settings, such as health departments, hospitals, or NGOs, gaining real-world exposure to environmental health work.Many students secure employment through these internships, with opportunities at organizations like the Wadsworth Center and Radix Ecological Sustainability Center. Overall, the program prepares graduates with the scientific knowledge, research skills, and practical experience needed to address environmental health challenges and improve community well-being.
