COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Studio Art at the University at Albany is a highly competitive, fully funded two-year program that allows students to pursue advanced artistic training without paying tuition, while also receiving an annual assistantship stipend of $21,000. The program admits a small cohort of ten students, ensuring an intimate and collaborative learning environment with access to private studio spaces, high-quality facilities, and personalized mentorship from professional faculty and visiting artists across multiple disciplines. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and designed to deepen both creative practice and critical understanding of contemporary art. Students complete 28 credits in a chosen area of specialization such as painting, sculpture, drawing, digital imaging, printmaking, or combined media, allowing them to develop a strong and focused artistic identity. Additional coursework includes a 4-credit Departmental Seminar that fosters critical dialogue and theoretical engagement, as well as an Exhibition Thesis Project worth 4 credits, where students present a one-person exhibition in the University Art Museum, marking the culmination of their work. Students also take 4 credits of studio art outside their specialization and 8 credits of studio electives, encouraging experimentation across different media and approaches. The program includes art history requirements, such as a Seminar in Contemporary Art and an additional 500-level course, which help students contextualize their work within broader artistic movements and critical frameworks. Throughout the program, students participate in individual tutorials, group critiques, and graduate seminars each semester, all of which contribute to developing greater self-awareness, critical thinking, and artistic depth. The program culminates in a professionally produced group exhibition at the University Art Museum, providing students with valuable exposure and experience in presenting their work.
