COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University at Albany is a 32-credit interdisciplinary program that provides a strong academic and practical foundation in feminist theory, social justice, and advocacy. The curriculum explores critical topics such as reproductive rights, motherhood, sexual harassment and assault, and the intersections of racism and sexism in public policy, while also examining how systems of oppression operate across different cultural and national contexts. A key focus of the program is understanding diversity, inclusion, and global perspectives, including issues related to transnationalism, globalism, and gender and sexual identity. Students begin with foundational courses such as Graduate Orientation in Women’s Studies, Feminist Theory, and a Research Seminar, which develop essential analytical and research skills. The program also includes flexible electives that allow students to specialize in a coherent area of study, explore intersections of race, class, sexuality, or nationality, and engage with unfamiliar disciplines to broaden their perspective. This structure encourages both depth and interdisciplinary learning. A central component of the program is the final master’s project, which combines academic research with real-world application. Students participate in off-campus activities and collaborate with organizations such as nonprofits, advocacy groups, government agencies, or political offices, particularly within the Capital Region. Through this work, they conduct interdisciplinary inquiry and produce a detailed report that includes analysis and practical recommendations. Areas of research may include topics like women in media, political participation, LGBTQ inclusion in workplaces, gender violence recovery, and public policy development. Overall, the program prepares graduates to become informed advocates and professionals capable of addressing complex social issues, promoting equity, and contributing to meaningful social change in diverse community and professional settings.
