COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Studio Art at the University at Albany is a 30-credit, intensive program that can be completed in just one year, offering students the opportunity to rapidly develop a strong and competitive artistic portfolio. The program is designed to support both creative growth and professional advancement, whether students plan to pursue a Master of Fine Arts (MFA), apply for competitive artist residencies, or work toward becoming K–12 art educators. It follows an interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to explore a wide range of artistic styles and mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation, photography, and related media. The curriculum is structured to balance focused specialization with broader artistic exploration. Students complete 24 credits in studio art, including 12 credits in a chosen area of specialization such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, or combined media. Additional coursework includes a 3-credit MA Seminar that encourages critical discussion and artistic development, a 3-credit Thesis Exhibition where students present their final body of work, and 6 credits in Drawing and Related Media to strengthen foundational skills. Students also take 3 credits of Art History electives at the 500 level or above, helping them connect their studio practice to historical and theoretical contexts. The program provides excellent facilities, including 24-hour access to private or semi-private studios, well-equipped shared workspaces, and advanced production equipment, allowing students to fully engage in their creative process. A highlight of the program is the final thesis exhibition held in the Boor Sculpture Studio, where students publicly showcase their work in a professional setting. Overall, the program offers a rigorous and immersive environment that fosters artistic innovation, critical thinking, and professional readiness in the field of contemporary art.
