COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Social Studies program at the University at Albany is a 30-credit graduate degree designed to provide students with both depth and breadth in interdisciplinary social science research. The program is structured to help students develop advanced analytical, historical, and research skills through a combination of concentrated study in a chosen discipline and broader coursework across related fields. It culminates in a research seminar where students present original findings based on in-depth investigation within their selected area of study, allowing them to demonstrate mastery of historical analysis and scholarly research methods. Students are encouraged to explore historical topics through a social consciousness framework that integrates political, economic, geographic, and cultural perspectives, helping them develop a well-rounded understanding of complex historical and contemporary issues. The program includes a concentration of 12 to 15 credits in one of several social studies disciplines, such as Africana Studies, Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Political Science, Public Affairs, Sociology, or Women’s Studies. These courses form the core of a student’s academic focus and support the development of original research. In addition, students complete 9 to 18 credits of supporting coursework within other areas of social studies outside their concentration, which broadens their intellectual perspective and strengthens interdisciplinary understanding. The program also allows for up to 6 credits of supporting coursework in related academic fields outside social studies, depending on academic goals and advisor approval. A key requirement is the research seminar of at least 3 credits, and students may choose to complete a thesis of 4 to 6 credits either in place of or in addition to the seminar, subject to departmental approval. Overall, the program prepares graduates to conduct meaningful research, think critically about historical and social issues, and apply their knowledge in academic, educational, policy, and research-oriented careers.
