COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Philosophy program at the University at Albany is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in major areas of philosophical study while allowing flexibility through elective coursework. The program requires students to complete core courses in three key areas: epistemology and metaphysics, history of philosophy, and value theory. These core areas help students develop a broad understanding of fundamental philosophical questions related to knowledge, reality, moral values, and human thought. In epistemology and metaphysics, students explore topics such as the nature of existence, mind, logic, and scientific reasoning. In value theory, the focus is on ethical and political philosophy, including issues of justice, religion, law, and social responsibility. The history of philosophy area introduces students to influential thinkers and traditions, including ancient philosophers like Plato and Aristotle, as well as modern movements such as British empiricism, continental rationalism, and Kantian philosophy.Beyond the core requirements, students complete additional credits through elective graduate-level philosophy courses. These electives allow students to specialize in areas of interest and further expand their understanding of philosophical thought. Course options include subjects such as philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, analytic philosophy, philosophy of law, and contemporary social and political philosophy. This flexibility enables students to tailor their academic experience according to their intellectual goals and research interests.To complete the degree, students must choose between two options. They can either write a six-credit master’s thesis, which involves in-depth research on a specific philosophical topic, or complete additional coursework along with a master’s talk, which includes four extra credits and a two-credit presentation. This structure ensures that students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also develop strong research, writing, and communication skills essential for further academic study or professional development in philosophy and related fields.
